TREATISE, Gigs and more

On Tuesday the 23rd of Jan I had a concert at Sound of Mu here in Oslo with a fantastic saxophone player from China: Li Tie Qiao and with Alex Gunia (Germany) on Guitars and electronics We performed a selection I did from the piece TREATISE by composer Cornelius Cardew.
originally a 193 pages long Graphic score. We performed the pages 1-3 and 67-74. and the instrumentation was:
me on Bass, gongs, cymbals, radio and electronics. Tie qiao on Alto & Tenor saxophone and flutes. and Alex Gunia, Extended guitar and electronics. And we projected the score pages on to the wall,so that the audience also was invited to interpret what they saw and heard.
I got the score some time ago,and thought it would be cool to perform this some day, and finally it happened as I got the chance to perform it together with Alex and Tieqiao.
About the piece: The score is freely interpreted and all the symbols and graphics are to interpreted according to each performers creative instincts, Cardew based his concept behind this piece on the Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgensteins ideas about the philosphy of logic in the book "Tractatus" ( (hence the name TREATISE) Wittgenstein ideas in Tractatus is in short: It is in the language, the limits of thought is drawn and how the forms revealed by logic are embedded in the world of facts and, therefore, in the language that we use to describe it. Cardew applied this idea into a compositional and performing practise and he started to work on this in 1963 finished the piece in 1967.

apple releases iphone

Apple just released their multi touch capable device witch includes the OSX operating system,
http://www.apple.com/iphone
Now thats interesting for those of us that are performing and composing music, The question is: Can it be used as a multi touch controller? for example controlling sotfware wireless with OSC? like the Lemur from Jazzmutant I guess that question will be answered in a near future. I am not sure at this moment how advanced the Apple version of a multi touch technology is. At this moment of writing is not for sale yet according to Apples website.

A review(TAS)from the Pd Conception gig at the Saumarkt,Feldkirch,Austria

2007

So now it is 2007, And the tour with Gunia//Evensen//Tveit in Germany went really well, in addition to playing concerts, we did some recording both live in Stadtgarten,Cologne and in a studio in Cologne.
Also did a concert in Feldkirch,Austria with Pd Conception, which also went really great.
Upcoming gigs with Gunia//Evensen//Tveit in mid Jan. at Sound of Mu and Spasibar,Oslo,Norway.
And there will be a gig the 1st of April at the Klangfest 07 in Triesen,Liechtenstein with Pd Conception.
I also have a nice project with singer EA composer Gyrid Kaldestad which we have to work more on,
we already did some rehearsels and looking foward to developing this concept we have, with bass, electronics and voice.

Update and plans ahead

Its been a while since I posted my first posting, guess I have to try to disicpline myself a little more..
Anyway things has been great over the last few weeks. It is now Confirmed that there is going to be a tour with Gunia/Evensen/Tveit in Germany and Switzerland and maybe Austria. From 29th Nov -4th Dec. There are some gigs that are tba but hopeful these will happen Looking forward to this.
With Pd conception we got a gig in Austria at the 8th of December so that is just perfect, cause me and Terje are already in the area (well sort of.. In Cologne/Germany but.. Still..)

On this Thursday I am going to meet up with Arve Voldsund, he is a guitarist, electronically engineering whiz ,great Max/MSP programmer and a sensor madman(checkout his website www.avols.com).Were going discuss some matters concerning a Max/MSP software he has made using Mapping and sample controlling, Might be just perfect for me to use an intuitive musical Real time controller in for example the Live work I do at the moment.. We are also discussing a commissioning of a hardware sensor interface with OSC capabilities (he have done a prototype for his Master Thesis check it out at (http://www.avols.com/interface) At the moment I am using various Reaktor programming,Kontakt software and hosting them all in a system I made in PLogues great software Bidule ( plogue.com) It works well for playing Live at the moment ,but I lack the intuitive controller input for this system,I want to have a better musical control over them. And Arve is the guy for helping me out on this I think.

There is a LOT of dynamic controllers out there both commercial and non-(as in experimental) commercial and I tried many but I think it is nice working out a concept that fits me and my needs as a perfomer and Musician. If you're into controllers MIDI and OSC controllers you might want to check out these sites: http://createdigitalmusic.com/tag/alternative-controllers/
or for reviews of some more commercial http://emusician.com/midi/
There is a lot of exiting stuff happening in that field at the moment.
